To celebrate the 11th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, the "Belt and Road · Harmony in Diversity" Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition was grandly held. Ms. Zhang Zhengyi, a renowned calligrapher and third-generation inheritor of the Huapai calligraphy school, attended as a specially invited artist. Her works, distinguished by profound traditional mastery and contemporary vitality, became a highlight of the exhibition, showcasing the unique charm of Chinese calligraphic art.
Zhang Zhengyi, a National First-Class Artist and member of the China Calligraphers Association, is the third-generation direct inheritor of the Huapai calligraphy school. She studied under Dong Zhenghe before becoming a disciple of Liu Xiaolin and Hua Luxiang—second-generation inheritors of Hua Shiqiu’s legacy—mastering the essence of Huapai calligraphy. Her works harmonize classical techniques with modern innovation, honoring tradition without rigid adherence.
Her piece Virtue Inspires Virtue (见贤思齐) is housed in the National Art Museum of China, while multiple works grace the collections of various embassies in China. Selected for the China Modern Art Yearbook, her calligraphy has been incorporated into the National Lanting Calligraphy Font Library, cementing her status as a paradigm of contemporary Chinese calligraphic art.
At the event, Ms. Zhang Zhengyi skillfully blended the bold, distinctive brushwork of the Huapai school with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities, embodying the Silk Road spirit of "Peace, Friendship, and Cooperation" in her calligraphic art. The honorary chairman of the China Calligraphers Association praised her work: "It not only inherits the orthodox lineage of the Huapai tradition but also radiates a modern vitality, truly exemplifying the perfect fusion of heritage and innovation."
The exhibition also featured a dedicated "Huapai Calligraphy Art Zone", showcasing Zhang’s recent masterpieces such as Selected Passages from The Analects (《论语选句》) and Ode to the New Orchid Pavilion (《兰亭新咏》), which drew the admiration of numerous international guests.
As an inheritor and disseminator of the art of calligraphy, Ms. Zhang Zhengyi has insisted on going into the military camps for ten years to help build the culture of the troops with the art of calligraphy. She also serves as an art consultant for the History of Art Education in the World and as a visiting professor of the Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts and is committed to promoting the international dissemination of calligraphy education and the art of the Chinese School of Calligraphy.
She said, “Calligraphy is the treasure of Chinese culture, we want to use ink and brush as a link to let the world feel the deep heritage of Chinese art and the spirit of the times.”
